The lights of the county fair were bright in the darkness. After so many years of doing nothing at all and being a complete introvert, Ru had made good on his promise to take Simon to the fair.
The vampire could not enjoy any of the food there anymore, which had previously been his favorite part of going to the fair, but at least he could enjoy Simon’s company. And win every single prize for him. Everything he could possibly want. Maybe even the giant werewolf from Five Nights At Freddy’s (It was a werewolf, wasn’t it?) The vampire was going to do all that and more, and hopefully avoid spending his entire paycheck on the outing. As they left the car, Ru reached out to take Simon’s hand, smiling like a complete nerd. He was always excited to be with him, and doing something new made it even more exciting. “Hey, I haven’t really been since I was a teenager…”

The air smelled of all kinds of fried deliciousness, and Simon was noticeably sniffing the air as he stepped out of the van. He grinned when Ru took his hand, and brought their hands up so he could give Ru's hand a little kiss.
"Aw, we'll have to make sure you have a good time then, babe. It's been a little while for me too. Just remember: The games are rigged, everything is fried, and we got all night."
Simon gestured broadly at the fair before them. It was really pretty at night, and he eyed up a ferris wheel in the distance. When he'd been with his younger siblings, they'd usually gone during the day. Night might be a whole new animal.
"What do you wanna do first?"

The vampire’s face was so pale it almost glowed in the moonlight as he smiled, touched by Simon’s romantic gesture. It was times like now he was both glad and sad that he couldn’t blush anymore. How could he feel this good about being with another person? How could someone as funny and sweet as Simon exist?
Ru wasn’t sure and he didn’t know if there was an answer to that question, but he was happy that he was here by Simon’s side.
“Oh, I’m in the presence of a gentleman.”
The vampire curtsied in response, dipping low and holding his coattails. He was excited, really excited, about tonight and couldn’t wait to get started, especially on his secret ‘get Simon all the things’ mission.
He squeezed Simon’s hand and moved to walk alongside him, swinging their arms back and forth like a schoolchild. He could have skipped to the front gate of the fair, but he didn’t want to draw too much attention. Some nervous part of him was absolutely sure that somebody was going to say something rude and upsetting at some part of the evening, but for now he was going to have a great time.
“Yeah! You have to try all the fried food. I’ll pay, and um… I want to do the rigged games. I think I can win now… You know…vampire accuracy and all.”
Ru made a gesture that looked like tossing a disk in the air in front of himself, and then turned back towards Simon, still smiling like a complete fool.
“Um, well, uh, how do you feel about rides?”
The vampire pulled out his pink phone, decorated by cartoon ghosts, and the two passed through admissions and entered the Fairgrounds.
And what a sight it was. Loud music, flashy food stands. Every kind of delicacy that someone might ask for and a lot of fried food. It was all here and waiting for them.
He craned his head to the left and eyed the rides. Would Simon be game for any of them? He hadn’t tried to take him to any amusement parts before. Or wait! There were games over there!
“Or uh, we can try some games!”

Simon chuckled at Ru's curtsy. He was cute. Really cute. He didn't think he would ever get used to it. Would it ever become mundane? He hoped if it did, it'd be in a fond, soft way. He swung their hands as they walked, grinning like a dork as they made their way out of the parking lot.
"You brought the right man for the job, handsome." Simon gave his belly a pat.There was always room for fried food. "I wanna see that for sure. Catch them by surprize, heh."
Simon peered into the nonsense and nodded agreeably.
"I like rides, and games. if they're real fast rides I'll have to take off my glasses and be blind, but you'll be my eyes, won't you?"
Simon took Ru's arm and hugged his hand to his chest, giving him his best puppy eyes and trying not to break into snickering.

“I think your eyes are already beautiful, but I’ll be happy to see for you. Maybe the mothman is hiding up there somewhere…”
Ru gazed down at Simon, and, unfortunately, seemed completely immune to the giggle effect that most normal people got from gazing into their boyfriends’ eyes for too long. He place his other hand on Simon’s shoulder, glowing with sincerity.
“Of course I would… Oh uh, fried pickles stand! Do you uh, want to try anything? I’m not sure how a fried pickledog is going to taste?”
His eyes trailed over to a stand with ‘brownie cookie caramel milkshake with sparkling candy’ and then looked down at his boyfriend. Would he want to try that instead? Would he want both?
“Or maybe one of these!”
His eyes drifted over to the duck-ring game. They could try that too.
“I… Hey we can get 20 rings. Maybe we can both throw 10 and try to get that uh. Cool plush.”
He gestured up at a giant stuffed animal the size of Simon. It was a gray wolf with black marks and red lipstick on. Was this a girl werewolf?

Simon, however, did not have the ability to keep a straight face, even if Ru was the sweetest man walking the earth. The snicker broke free, and he beamed up at Ru, his glasses reflecting the fair's lights.
"You're too cute." Simon said, squeezing Ru's hand.
The werewolf eyed up the pickle stand as if accepting a challenge, his free hand going to his hip. Then, he squinted at the ringtoss and the associated werewolf. He nodded in finality.
"I'm legally required to try that, Ru. We can do the toss game and come back for that pickle dog."
He smirked up at the big werewolf with lipstick. The lady werewolf was nearly him sized- huge. He had a decent throwing arm even after all these years, but he was certain the game was rigged against them. It would be fun to try, though, and Ru seemed into it. He squinted at the happy little plastic ducks, the fowl yet unaware that they were about to have objects flying at their necks.

Ru resisted the preschool-like urge to say ‘no you are’ and instead just shook his head at Simon, gazing back with admiration. He just couldn’t with him. He would have thought after nine months, his novelty to his werewolf boyfriend would have worn off, but instead it had just..well…continued. And he was loving it.
He squeezed his hand back, and just about skipped to the ring-toss game, looking up at the barker breathlessly. Well, mostly breathlessly because he was a vampire who did not need to breathe, but that was besides the point.
He dug around in his pocket, and pulled his bat-shaped wallet out of his pocket. While it wasn’t amazing to think about how he would never be human again, he considered being an obvious vampire something of an upside.
The vampire pulled out a twenty and handed it to the barker, who in return gave each of them ten rings to throw. He tossed the rings out, hoping to however would listen that he might manage to throw the rings over something. Anything really.
It turned out that being a vampire didn’t quite give you all the advantages you might hope for, but he got five of the rings on five of the ducks.
The barker eyed him and smiled;
“Ten rings on ten ducks, and you get the big one.”
He then looked over at Simon, waiting.

"Nice, Ru!"
Simon cheered as he watched his boyfriend throw the rings at the ducks. He had also assumed Ru would destroy the game somehow with some vampyric throwing powers or something. No such luck, but Ru was cute trying. Five was nothing to sneeze at, either. He leaned over and squeezed the vampire's arm.
"Good job, sweetie."
Simon turned his sights on the fair man and smirked, leaning against the stand. He turned one of the rings over in his hand.
"Ten Rings, ten ducks? That's a lot of commitment, man."
Simon peered over the ducks, nodded to himself, and made a show of stretching. Finally, he threw the rings, one after another, very quickly. He stood back and admired his work. Two rings on two ducks. He nodded to the man like he'd won.

The man looked at the ducks, and then back at the two men, and looked up at the medium-sized prizes with a smile. Smaller plushes of what looked like Spongebob, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton stared down at them from above the duck display.
Ru glanced at Simon, asking the question with his eyes, before pulling another bill from his pocket. He squared his shoulders puffing out his chest;
“Twenty more! We’re going all in!”
The barker shrugged, and provided them with ten more rings each.
This time, Ru managed to get six more. He really needed to practice. Maybe one day, he’d be a skilled enough vampire to go ten for ten! But for now, he’d have to be satisfied with getting just six. Six wasn’t bad, and it was enough to get the big werewolf for Simon.
The giant plush was taken down and placed in a huge plastic bag to protect it, before it was handed directly to Simon. At close range, the werewolf could see that the plush had eyeshadow on.
The barker paused and turned to the two of them;
“So, you have three…and his. You can keep going. Maybe get a medium-sized prize…or a small one if you’re lucky.”
The vampire eyed the stuffed animals. He wasn’t really the biggest spongebob fan, but maybe Em would like one?

Simon smiled as he watched Ru throw prepare himself to throw the rings. It was cute. He didn't need the giant wolf, but, Ru seemed to want to win it. And the wolf was cute. Just like Ru.
The man put the wolf in the bag, and Simon grinned as he received it.
"You know we gotta carry it with us now, right babe?"
Simon teased him playfully, speaking as the wolf in a silly 'girly' voice. The stuffed animal was so large that Simon was nearly entirely hidden behind it as he held it in his arms.
"You bought the rings, we should try at least. We can give 'em to a kid if you don't like em."

Ru laughed as Simon waved the wolf around, speaking for her. It honestly did look like the wolf was talking; it was so big that it almost completely obstructed his view of his boyfriend.
He leaned over and kissed its snout through the plastic bag, leaving a smear of black lipstick where he made contact, then turned back towards the Barker. He should have considered that he had an audience, but it was hard to be focused when he was with Simon.
The vampire nodded at the attendant, and picked up the rest of his rings, leaving five for Simon.
This time, all five made it onto the ducks’ necks. Maybe he did secretly have vampire gameplay powers after all!
He looked over at Simon with excitement and took his hands as he pointed at the Spongebob merchandise. Which one did he want? Did he want two? He still had his five final rings to throw.
As the vampire waited for an answer, one of the rings rolled off the top railing, and, of is own accord, rolled right between the two of them. The strangeness of this did not evade Ru, who had felt no wind, nor any movement that could have jostled it off.
Odd.
A little chill in the air raised his ghost-hackles but…this was a fairground. Ghosts didn’t live here.

Simon snickered at Ru as he smooched the wolf through the plastic, peering around his new fuzzy companion. He made the wolf cheer as Ru threw the five rings with perfect aim, glad that they were getting Ru's money worth at least.
"Nice, Rubarb!"
His gaze was drawn to the little spongebob plush animals, strongly considering the little plankton guy, but his hearing caught the ring hitting the floor. He scrunched his face, looking around. It wasn't windy. The man running the game hadn't moved. Huh. He squinted at the ring, looking for fishing wire or... anything, really. That was odd.
"That still counts, right?"

The attendant glanced in the direction that the ring had rolled, his expression decidedly bored. He paused a moment, but not to consider anything supernatural; instead, he reached into the bag of rings, and pulled out another one for Simon.
“Here ya go.”
Ru turned to Simon, then drifted off, his gaze following the way of the rolling ring. It was strange that a ghost was hanging around the fairgrounds, but who was he to judge? Maybe ghosts liked fairs too. And maybe this one was trying to get their attention.
His eyes were led directly to “FUN MAIZE CORN MAZE,” a corn and hay bale maze set up about a hundred feet behind the game stand. It did have that fun fall look that Ru loved, but he didn’t always love how dry hay stuck to his clothing.
He decided that he would have to ask Jonny later. He seemed to know a lot about what ghosts did and didn’t do, and sometimes why.
Finally, his eyes returned to Simon, and he smiled;
“You going to get that Plankton?”
He inclined his head towards the Maze, trying to be subtle, as he tossed the last rings, earning another Spongebob plush for Simon’s hoard.
“We might even have to put these little buddies in the car after this! Look at me go!”
The attendant shifted with a smile, and waited for their selection of plushes.

Simon happily accepted the plankton, thanking the attendant and then Ru. Maybe... Maybe they should put their new friends in the car. He didn't dwell too hard on the weirdness, Ru didn't seem bothered, and the guy running the stand didn't seem to notice or care really either.
"You are the king of games, I would bow but I got my hands full."
He looked in the direction of the maize maze, following Ru's Gaze. His keen sense of smell would help him not to get too lost, but sometimes it was fun to do mazes. The kiddos had always enjoyed them when they were little, and when they were little they would complain at him as he made various corny (ha) jokes.
"You wanna get lost with me babe? Or do more games?"

Ru put an arm on Simon’s shoulder conspiratorially, leaning close to his ear as he whispered, “How many giant plushies do you want? What if I got you every single werewolf at the fall fair?”
He eyed the rows of fair games. Getting every single ring on every single duck had emboldened him and made him feel as if he could take on anything.
He then realized that Simon was now as much his boyfriend as a pile of plushies. If he was going to do anything else, including going into the corn maze, they should drop those off in the car. After all, they were stamped and could come back in.
“You know, I’m feeling brave tonight. Shocker, I know. I think we should get all the prizes that you might ever want to share with Em, and then we should get some deep-fried pickles and oreos, then get ourselves into the maze.”
The vampire smiled, fangs glinting in the moonlight;
“If that’s all the prizes you want, let’s get your food, and go to the maze next.”
