The vampire looked around “Fairy Fun,” inspecting all of the merchandise. He found nothing of interest, and no signs of the little ghost. He frowned, and rubbed the back of his head, and then stretched and put an arm around Simon’s shoulder, very smoothly.
“Hm. Nothing here. Maybe… we’re supposed to take a turn or something.”
His eye caught the little wolf, and he smiled, and slyly slipped one of the two some money, pointing covertly at the figurine. The second woman, the lady friend, smiled, and handed the little wolf over to Ru, who then promptly turned it over to Simon.
“…But I have a little something for you!”
The vampire beamed, and with a flourish, presented it to his boyfriend, grinning.
While the vampire’s back was turned, Simon could swear he saw someone waving at him. Guiding him down the road and towards the bright lights of the giant Ferris wheel. A brief shade under “Corn and Dogs” waved to them before passing onward and down the road.

Simon sniffed around as subtly as he could, squinting around still. When Ru put his arm around him Simon's investigation stopped. He leaned on Ru with a sigh, folding his arms.
"I dunno, ghost whisperer."
Simon was eyeing one of the fantasy statues in the opposite directions of where Ru was doing his sneaky deals. He wanted to get Ru a little buddy, but he couldn't decide which one. He had glanced to Ru to ask him what he thought, only to immediately choke out a laugh as he was offered the little wolf. He took it and laughed a little more.
"Oh you...! I was trying to get you back! You gotta stop being such a sweetheart, you- heeeeeey..."
Simon pointed over Ru's shoulder. He leaned in, whispering.
"It wants us to get corn dogs."

“You can’t get me back. Giving is my one good quality!”
The vampire smiled, his voice wavering as he joked, gently. Sometimes he didn’t really know what he had to offer anyone else in his life, but he was glad that Simon saw something in him.
At the mention of the corndogs, Ru swiveled in the other direction, turning Simon with his body as he squeezed his boyfriend gently under his arm. He gazed over at the corndog stand and saw… A Corndog stand labeled “Corn and Dogs.”
“Well, we can’t disobey a ghost, now can we?”
He pulled away just enough to take Simon by the hand, and lead him to towards the stand, maneuvering past a small crowd of very intoxicated women wearing casual costumes. The pungent smell of alcohol diffused itself around them as they reached “Corn and Dogs.”
The stand was perfectly ordinary in every way. Corndogs sat cooking on an open grill. A couple of bored-looking attendants took the orders of customers in front of the stand. Simon could see some of them breading pickles nearby.
The massive shadow of the Ferris wheel loomed over them.
Ru frowned, staring at the stand, and scratched the back of his head.
“Hm.”
As they puzzled, Simon felt a gentle ‘thunk’ against his boot. Should he look down, he would notice what looks like a large, blunt screw resting against the side of his shoe.

"Oh, you're full of it. It being good qualities."
Simon squeezed Ru's hand as they walked over towards the corndog stand, passing the women dressed as witches, cats, and scarecrows. They couldn't disobey a ghost! Even though he had figured out his nose wasn't useful here, he couldn't smell ghosts, he couldn't help but sniff as they walked. There were plenty of good things to smell- Ru, food, the night air, but none of it was ghosts.
When they got to the stand, the corndogs fought for Simon's attention, but he looked around first. Nothing immediately jumped out at him... Until something did.
He squinted at the ground, gently nudging the object with his foot. His eyes widened as he realized what it was, and he quickly picked it up.
"Hey, babybat? I think this, uh, is supposed to be up there?"
Simon held up the screw, then looked up at the ferris wheel with an expression of concern. That... Really didn't need to start rolling around or anything.

"...Aw...Oh...what? Oh no..."
Ru glanced over at the oversized screw in Simon’s hands, and then squinted with concern as he looked up at the Ferris wheel. Had it dropped from the sky and he’d just completely failed to notice anything? It must have…where else could it come from?
As Simon turned the giant screw about in his hands, he could clearly see the bright yellow paint of the screw most certainly matched the material of the wheel above them.
Ru stared down at the screw, apparently dumbfounded, and then wandered in the rough direction of the operator’s stand, reaching out to take Simon’s hand and avoid losing his boyfriend in the crowd.
Simon glanced upwards, away from the screw, only to see a familiar shadowy shape waving to him from behind one of the many stalls closer to the base of the Ferris wheel.
There was a cold gust of wind near Simon’s cheek, he blinked, and the shadowy figure was gone.

Simon held Ru's hand as they walked over to the operator's stand, a look of concern squishing his features as they made their way through the crowd of autumnal celebration. Had the ghost wanted to warn someone of the ride's potential danger? Had they caused it? He hadn't felt anything malicious, but he wasn't the one who knew about ghosts. That was Ru.
The werewolf spotted the little shadow shape waving, squinting at their indistinct form peeking out at him. They were over by the Ferris wheel, but when he blinked he lost them again. He was unsure if he was supposed to head back over to the stalls, but first thing was first, getting the attention of someone who could tell them if the Ferris wheel was about to go bouncing around without that bright yellow bolt.
"They're over by the wheel. You think we got what they were trying to tell us...?"

Ru looked down at Simon, his blue eyes wide, and nodded once. His eyes contrasted vividly with his pale skin. He didn’t know exactly what it was trying to tell him. That would take the spirit…well… talking to him, but he did have the distinct sense that it had something to do with the giant screw that had fallen out of the Ferris wheel.
Sometimes ghosts were ponderers of ill omens.
And sometimes they just wanted to help people.
As the two neared the attendant’s booth, they both could hear that the wheel seemed, well, creakier than normal. Fair rides were usually far from quiet but there was just something… a little louder and grindier about the noises that this one was making.
The person in the booth looked like a young man in his late teens or early 20’s. Though the many buttons in front of him were lit, and he pressed some occasionally, most of his attention seemed directly invested in his phone in front of him.
Ru moved up next to him and waved shyly.
“Uh….hi?”
The operator looked up…and then down over the open ride operation window at them. Scraggly dyed-blond hair and a scruffy, patchy beard.
“…The line is over there.”
He gestured vaguely toward the queue line.

Simon's sharp ears could clearly pick up the creaking of the wheel. Dragging the siblings to fairs over the years had given him a pretty good idea of what things were supposed to sound like. This wasn't it.
Simon scurried over with Ru, observing the young man absorbed in his phone. Hm. That'd explain a few things, but the werewolf didn't pause to theorize too long.
"Yeah, not here for a ride, your wheel is falling apart."
Simon jerked his thumb in the direction of the wheel, holding up the screw in his other hand for the guy to see. He didn't know that the thing was gonna fall apart, but it was a potential risk, so he had no issues potentially overstating the issue.
"You gotta stop it and check it out."
The werewolf's tone was firm, there wasn't time to argue.

“…The…the what? Is that a screw?”
The young man at the booth peered hazily down at Simon, eyes slightly bloodshot, pressing his phone onto the booth’s surface in front of him as he processed the werewolf’s words. He took a moment, then frowned, shook his head, and half-climbed out of the booth to look at the wheel more closely himself, before making a displeased sound.
“…Oh…shit…”
The second word was swallowed, almost under his breath, and his eyes widened. He scrambled, slipping a little as he pressed the ‘end ride’ button, looking frantically at the interior of the booth, as if it could tell him what to do. Almost hesitantly, the wheel slowed and came to a halt, the sound of displeased riders audible even from the ground level.
He paused, fidgeting with the door of the attendant’s booth, hands shaking, then stepped out. The young man grabbed a megaphone that looked about twenty years out of date as he made his announcement to the riders;
“All riders are to disembark now. Ride is closed! We’ll be refunding your tickets for the ride, see the attendant on the way out so he can scan your tickets.”
He then turned to Simon and Ru, with a mixture of bewilderment and concern, putting down the megaphone as he allowed the confused passengers off the ride, one by one, aided by the other attendant.
“I don’t know how you found that screw, but I’ll tell management to take a look at the Wheel. Thanks.”
The young man seemed not to know what else to say, and scooted back into the booth, placing a call to what Simon assumed was management, detailing the situation frantically.
Considered the situation handed, Ru turned to his boyfriend and gave him a side hug, holding him tight with a little smile. They had done what they needed to do, and could go back to sampling the ‘six flavors of lemonade’ and ‘cinnamon roll pie.’
“We did it…”
A week later, after the story came out, Simon and Ru were told that they must have met one of the Resident Spirits of the fair; Timmy Graves. While some considered him to be an omen of misfortune, others viewed Timmy as a protector, who tried to warn others of coming disaster.
“It looks like we met one of the regulars, and you saved some people, Simon. How does it feel to be a hero?”

Simon was laying on the couch, art book for the new horror game Clown ice hell on his belly. He raised his eyebrows, and wiggled into a sitting position.
"I'm glad the people are safe- but I'm pretty sure they little guy wouldn't have been around us if you weren't a ghost magnet."
It was a relief they'd caught onto the little ghost's antics. Before he'd been introduced to the supernatural, before he'd worked for the WDSA, he probably would've brushed things off as 'weird' and ignored things. It would've been very easy for someone to ignore Timmy, or to get scared and run away. Ru was a good person to target, He had that whole vampire thing going on.
"We should go back next year."

Ru smiled, and embraced Simon tightly in a hug, leaning his cheek against his boyfriend’s head. He had been such an immense source of joy in the vampire’s unlife, he couldn’t really imagine things without him now. He just wished he wasn’t so very cold all the time. It must be uncomfortable.
He squeezed his hand and smiled.
“I’m glad the little guy found us, even if I wanted to enjoy the pumpkin display a little longer.”
He leaned back, releasing his boyfriend from his disturbingly-strong embrace, his smile lingering on his lips. His eyes glowed with the affection he felt for his partner.
“Let’s go back next year for sure… I love you, Simon.”
