It was a gorgeous overcast day, clouds blocking the glare of the sun to help cool the temperature from the usual high 80's down to a comfortable high 70's during Wathais' Spring and early Summer months. Stenson rolled the window of the Charger down, waiting patiently as he gazed out at the open parking lot of the mall. Cars had trickled in and out casually all day, and with it being mid-week, it was not nearly as busy as it normally was during the weekends. He was dressed in his typical officer uniform, complete with utility belt and vest.
Still, teenagers and families were beginning to enjoy the first few weeks of no school, and Stenson knew that meant more visitors to places like this. It hadn't taken long for most of the parking lot to fill up earlier that day, and tracking the cars had become more difficult. He had been given the briefing for the day's job, but it was quick and to the point. Find a suspected thief that frequented the mall on certain days, look for a particular vehicle and plate number, and hope for the best. The only catch, as with most WDSA jobs, the thief might be a Super.
Beside him sat Zavijah, equipped with the uniform and vest given to a typical Bronze trainee, given to her after their initial briefing. Overall, it was a simple task, an easy first-timer challenge for new agents or officers. Zavijah, who had spent quite some time deciding on the idea of being an officer, was finally convinced to tag along to become official, signing up for evaluation and new hire training, which eventually led to this such job. She'd gotten this far with hard work and basics in things like reading/writing/math skills, security training, cadet training, and of course the usual physical and psychological evaluations. She was eventually deemed ready for her first real job.
"I'm sure you can see by now that not all days as an officer are jam packed with excitement and action." Stenson said, breaking the casual silence. He looked over at Zavijah and stretched his back before settling back against the seat. They'd been here for at least 4 hours now, and sometimes jobs like this didn't even amount to much.

zavijah:
Indeed, It took much time and a few meetings for her to finally come to this point. . . .the uniform was odd as well as the vest, though she didn outright reject it. . .abit bulky in its fit seeing hao she just removed her coat and put the uniform on ontop of her own clothing. . .being weary of the possibility that it might burn. . . The meeting at the teashop was rather. . . Embarrassing to say the least. . . If she was prideful, the way she admitted she no longer knew hao to read or write in modern English would of killed that pride. . .
Writing in old English wasnt quite what he was looking for either it seemed. . . She could only imagine the fustration she caused him with such. . . She felt guilty. . .
"Such does not surprise me for 'excitement' to not occur as a daily occurrence. . . " she replied as she observed the auras within the crowd. . .". . Very few would be able to remain in such a continuous battle. . " she added. . . . She was focused on the task at hand, not wanting to cause more trouble for the officer then she had already caused. . .during the 4 hours she remained in the seat, even to that day, still hesitant to sit down. . . Though shes slowly learning that it's odd to just stand next to the chair. . .she haoever opted to sit on her knees and feet in the chair(practically just squatting in the chair), giving the appearance she was atcually smaller. . . .
Though it annoyed her abit when some of the people who passed by assumed her Stenson's daughter, seeing has small she was. . .
Shes not that tiny, is she?

"Well, that's good! Because no excitement is probably best, otherwise there's trouble and people could get hurt." Stenson replied absently, waving politely to a passing family as they crossed the front of his parked vehicle.
Thankfully, even with the casual conversation, Stenson did notice that Zavijah remained vigilant and watchful, careful to keep eyes open for any sign of their suspect, and he was glad of that. Her attentiveness was promising and only time would tell if she remained as alert as this, now that she was an officer. It would also be a useful trait if ever she chose to follow any other positions within WDSA.
While they waited, Stenson thought now would be a good time for another rundown on the details and to see what she remembered from the briefing earlier. Part of staking a place out was to keep yourself focused and aware of the task at hand, memorizing details. He pulled a folder the center console area and opened it to reveal the paperwork of their assignment. After years of his own work, Stenson had already developed the skills necessary to memorize known details at their first briefing, so going over the paperwork was redundant for him. He wondered how much she might remember from their briefing.
The first page listed basic information. Not a whole lot was known just yet about the case, and it had only recently reached the WDSA's attention after the regular WPD failed to figure out what was going on. It got too....weird, for them. The top contained the case number and date of processing, below that was listed the known details.
Location of reported incidents: Wathais Mall, West side
Date of incidents: Pattern followed certain weekdays, last reported on second and third Wednesday of the month.
Time of incidents: Varied, open hours of operation
Suspect: Eye witness accounts inconsistent, physical description changing per case and report, no confirmation on the appearance of the suspect.
Consistencies lie in vehicle description, reportedly a faded red minivan, tag numbers C4NGL1NG, parks towards the west side entrance.
WDSA involvement upon the 5th incident, eye witness accounts recall different single individuals exiting the vehicle to enter the mall, and another individual exiting to flee the scene. Human in appearance, but never seen more than once.
Video survelliance has been captured, but no I.D. has been made on any clear image of the suspect or suspects at large. Public records fail to produce any names or identities.
Stenson found this rather peculiar at the time, that even with a clear image, they were not able to find an identity for this thief. It had appeared, at first, to be group of individuals, but all had apparently only used one car to arrive and leave, and none were ever seen again, nor were they ever matched to a specific name or person.
"So," Stenson started, skimming through the file, "Do you remember who we're looking for? What they look like?" The question was broad, perhaps even a trick question, but it would either catch her off guard and cause her to make a wild guess on an appearance, or she might even surprise him with an accurate recollection of what was known on the case. He held the page so it faced away from her, just in case, so that she would be forced to remember on her own.

zavijah:
She paused for a moment while she kept her eyes focused in looking for the signs the WSDA instructed to look for amongst for signs she had seen in the past. . . Thinking back on the description- well, the inconsistent descriptions mentioned of the thief, they mentioned not everyone will remember the same details correctly. . . At first its thought to be a group of people, but only one person came and left a 'red minivan' . . .whatever in God's name that is. . .
Though, it was curious he asked for a particular question of what thief would look like if the descriptions varied so heavily. . " . . . If I recall correctly, the Wathais Police Department were given many descriptions of the actions of the thief. . . Using the same mount to return and leave the mall. . . .if it's an singular person. . ." she replied before going into thought. . . "They are either a singular person or a well organized group." She lamely finished the thought verbally. . . Though. . . .
Not that many people would gather just to steal belongings or merchandise. . . . .a growing army would just move to take over the trading village that was the Wathais Mall. . . .
"Reguardless of if they merely have many garbs or an ability to change their appearance at will, some aspects will not change as easily. "

Stenson was impressed, to say the least. Not only did she remember the detail about the varied descriptions and unconfirmed I.D., but she also had a theory to go with what could be happening. It matched his guesses exactly, that they were dealing with some kind of shapeshifter, and he was happy to see she'd figured it out so easily. He made another mental note that she seemed to have a knack for investigative thinking as well. Another great and versatile skill to have in any field, not just as an officer.
"Excellent, and your hypothesis matches my own." Stenson praised, and then wondered, "What other aspects wouldn't change? If you don't mind me asking."
Another car passed by, specifically a red minivan, but with the wrong tag number. Stenson also watched Zavijah with this to see how she would react.

zavijah:
". . . their aura. . definitely. . " she replied frankly. If they were able to change their auras otherwise, the instability of such an act would be irreversible. . . to be plagued with the hell of the insecurity of wondering if you are the original or an extension of the false aura. . . . or to even question if you were a puppet. . .a soul sealed within a forged body. . .this was not even considering if such would succeed in the first place, as unstable as it was. . . would not succeed for even as long as the thief or thieves had plagued the trading village.
in addition to this, it would no longer be the same person. . . for they would of killed themselves off becoming a living collect. ". . .changing an aura that was not naturally adapted to change in nature is a death wish- at best. . . . those unaware both underestimate, as well as overestimate the strength of their aura's connection to their own bodies." she added.
her ear twitched at the notice of a red car. . . . It was 'wide' as Stenson explained. . . seeing hao she has no earthly idea what a minivan was little alone what they looked like outside of - by context- it was similar to Stenson's car, but red, wide, and with the same combination of symbols as on the report, as stenson explained . . . .
She studied it for a bit. . . It did not seem correct from the 'licence plate'. . . She studied it for abit longer, thinking back to the combination of symbols that was on the report. . . Before moving on. . . It was a rather fat 'car' wasnt it? . . . She went back to searching for the 'red minivan with the combination of symbols in the form of 'C4NGL1NG'. . .fat cars with the tag. . .that are red. . .
They did state it had to be that combination of symbols. .

Their aura? Stenson tried to remember if he'd heard of Zavijah speak of auras before, although she never seemed to be without a new surprise up her sleeve. So, she had a way of tracking an individual through any disguise they could muster. What she said sounded true enough, and although Stenson was not a specialist in spirits, ghosts, or the metaphysical properties of an individual, he trusted her judgement and experience.
"That comes in handy I bet!" He said, unsure of how else to tackle the new concept. To see spirits and auras, that had to be either a curse or a blessing. "I'd say at the very least, you would make a very promising agent if anything. Here's hoping our suspect shows and we can see how well things go from there. Now, remember, for a trial run you can leave most of the talking to me since part of avoiding violence and confrontation can rely heavily on how well an officer handles a situation verbally. Things can escalate, but we do our best to avoid that at all costs, unless the situation becomes too threatening or dangerous. Or unpredictable."
Stenson had a momentary thought of Viktoria, and how he'd handled that situation badly enough. The memory was forever burned into his mind, much like the scar had been burned into his arm. It was a lesson he would not soon forget, and hoped never to repeat. Working with Supers was far more complicated than simply working with humans.
Zavijah, it seemed, made no move to point out the red minivan that had passed them although she was scrutinizing the plate and the appearance. That was good, thanks to training at least she wasn't on a hair trigger, ready to spring at the first sign of a possible target. New recruits had a common problem with being too eager. It was easy to make mistakes, but making the mistake of going after the wrong individual never looked good on the police, and especially the WDSA. The less attention, the better, and minimizing mistakes by being careful and attentive was always encouraged.
However, no sooner did the first minivan turn to peruse the next lane of parking spots, than another red minivan drove slowly past. Its windows, tinted to obscure the driver and interior, gleamed under the overcast sky and it rolled slowly along past Stenson's Charger and towards the other end of the lane. With a quick motion, it swerved and stole a spot that was just opening up for another car. The brake lights flashed once before shutting off completely, and the frame of the car swayed as the driver exited the vehicle. Although the cars parked around it obscured the driver's identity, Stenson could clearly see the tag numbers on the back, which matched exactly what they had on their papers. He would give Zavijah a moment to ID the car, before unbuckling his seat belt to begin the next portion of their mission. The driver was already gone, ducked into the crowd to enter the west side of the mall, but if they moved quick, they could possibly tail them. At the bottom of the form, highlighted, was the suspect's choice stores to rob, primarily jewelry and expensive trinket shops. They would start there.
