“Wait Julean…he’s going to be…”
Ryu watched Julean leave before he got to explaining that Yoshio was probably going to be angry. He was fairly certain that the demon was going to assume the worst possible things had happened, given how Julean was going to describe them. Maybe he’d start with saying ‘we found a baby’ but somehow, he doubted it. .
The demon mediated questions while he had no doubt Yoshio was busy lecturing Julean, bumping the baby up and down, and hoping she stayed distracted by his fingers. They were going to need food asap, or she was going to start screaming.
Finally, Julian returned with supplies. This meant either Julean had been planning to have a baby, or Yoshio had sent some supplies to help them.
“Oh.. Someone make milk. The container tells you how to do it…”
And at that moment, the doorbell rang.
The human influencers jumped at the sound of the doorbell, as if they expected a monster to be on the porch. The realization dawned quickly: it was Aunt Yuki.
“Tia,” Katy said, eyeing Ryu knowingly. “Come with me. Let’s make formula, okay? The boys can talk with Auntie.”
Reluctantly, Tia nodded and stepped away from Jasmine. As the girls left for the kitchen, Julian exhaled with relief and threw open the door. Everything would be okay now. Boss knew what to do, how to keep an infant alive. He’d been a new parent, once.
Idly, Julian thought about Ryu’s baby pictures, and wondered what his temperament had been, all those years ago. Happy, no doubt. He’d probably been a sweet and smiley baby.
Aunt Yuki stood at the door, wearing a mermaid dress and top with puffed sleeves. Her long dark hair spilled over her shoulders, high heels making her seem as tall as ordinary Yoshio.
Yuki took one look at the baby and raised an eyebrow. While this child was certainly not theirs, she looked as if she could have been.
“Julean Parker. Let me see this note and this child, hm?”
Ryu held the baby close, almost protectively, a finger still in the child’s mouth.
“You aren’t going to hurt her are you?”
Yoshio stared at Ryu as if he was stupid and made a great sighing sound. The answer was obviously no.
“No boy, I need to understand this situation. And help you understand her needs.”
Julean quickly handed Yoshio the note, and then he looked questioningly at Ryu; was he really worried that Boss would hurt a newborn baby? Did he have a reason for his concerns? No way. He was probably just being protective. Completely understandable, tbh. Jasmine was tiny.
“It’s okay,” Julean reassured Ryu. “He’s done this before, with you. Yoshio gave us a diapers and food and a cradle and everything.”
Jasmine would need better clothes, though. Little baby swag. And one of those dangly mobiles to hang over her at night. Was she old enough to go on walks? If so, Versace sold strollers with elegant gold and black canopies.
“Let me …” Carefully, Julean took the baby from Ryu’s arms, surprised by how heavy she felt, considering her size. How much of the weight was her basket and swaddling? “You’re a baller, aren’t y–”
The moment Jasmine was taken from Ryu, she made a couple unhappy hiccups and then began to cry.
“Shit!” Julean cringed at himself. Who cursed in front of a baby? “Sorry! Here, here!”
Julean thrust the basket and baby toward Yoshio.
“I pissed her off!”
Yuki’s eyes became wide and glowed red for a moment, and she dipped her fingertips back and forth in the air. Smoke swirled from her fingertips to travel around the baby’s head and compelled her to be calm for now.
She then reached out and took the child from Julean’s arms, examining her more closely to determine exactly why the baby was here, and what her mother had meant by all of this scrawling.
Ryu made a concerned noise as he watched the child calm herself. He supposed as long as this wasn’t done too often, she would be alright, and there wasn’t anything they could do to appease her right now anyways.
“The child will need to be fed every two hours. She will need to be changed frequently as well. She will need to be kept at about 80 degrees F. She will need to be bundled tightly. They prefer body warmth, but will die if you roll on and crush them. I recommend Ryu watch the child primarily and will give him leave to care for her until you can find her relatives.”
The baby settled down quickly and squinted at Yoshio with her dark eyes. Immediately, he sensed that she wasn't entirely human. A faint otherworldliness clung to her; she wasn't powerful, at least not yet, and one of her parents must've been a mere mortal. The other parent, however, was a curious entity. A quick and frightening species, most famous for a figure named Spring-heeled Jack.
Springheels were known to look mostly human, but not completely. Sometimes, they had bat wings, horns, sharp teeth, long claws, goat legs. Jasmine's face was certainly unremarkable. But what did the swaddling hide?
"She's like a baby bird," Julean muttered worriedly, thinking about the time his grandmother found a little pink robin chick on their seventh-floor balcony; it'd fallen, somehow, and there were so many other balconies above them, they couldn't find its nest, didn't know where to begin. They had to feed it 'round the clock and clean its bedding when it pooped, which happened after every meal, and even after they tweezed bugs into its gaping mouth, it'd tweet tweet tweet like it was starving.
"We have motion-sensitive cameras," he said. "Put them up 'cause of stalkers. Maybe the mom walked past one, and we got a shot of her face?"
What good would that do, though? It wasn’t like he could hack into the government and run their facial recognition software.
Yuki stroked the child’s sparsely haired head and muttered;
“She’s a little devil. A creature called a spring-heel. No wonder people might want to cause her harm.”
She eyed Julean and Ryu. Both of them were knowledgeable about demonkind, but neither was what one might consider responsible, or mature. They were certainly not in any place to be parents, whether it was by discovering a child or creating one.
“I think if she was brought to a center, her arrival may create some unwanted attention. Perhaps the WDSA may help her, but this will also generate some..attention. Perhaps some kind of search for her parents or relatives might be made, and if this is unsuccessful, you must contact the authorities.”
Yuki was in loathe to contact any authorities, but this seemed like something that might get the boys into trouble of the non-demonic kind.
Ryu held out his arms, requesting the return of the child, and nodded at Julean. His expression was solemn.
“Yeah, like a baby bird. Seeing the mom might help us a little. It will give us somewhere to start, you know?”
As Yuki touched her head, the baby opened her gummy little mouth and wiggled in her blankets. She made a soft "uuu" sound and looked up at the New Person with the open curiosity of a baby. When Yuki returned her to Ryu, the baby ... almost smiled? Her expression was content, in any case, and she gazed at his face.
"She's a super!" Julean gasped. What were the chances? Well, he did post a lot of paranormal investigation content. Maybe that's what the note had meant by "open mind." But she was a type of devil? It almost seemed like ... fate.
"Spring-heels can jump like big crickets, right?" he asked. "Really high. She's going to be incredible at pool flips and parkour."
And she looked so happy in Ryu's arms.
Suddenly, a montage flashed through Julean's head.
Baby Jasmine strapped to his front in a Hangover-style harnass: she wore a baby tracksuit and sucked on a gold pacifier.
Toddler Jasmine learning to walk in the Beetle House, wobbling into Ryu's outstretched arms.
Toddler Jasmine napping peacefully backstage as the band played to a packed audience.
Julean, Ryu, and Child Jasmine moving into a mansion with a white picket fence, everyone holding hands. Ryu wore an apron, and Julean carried a briefcase, for some reason.
Ryu teaching Tween Jasmine how to swordfight.
Julean helping Teen Jasmine film her first TikTok video.
Ryu and Julean crying tears of joy as Jasmine went to a university in Los Angeles to study theater and computer science.
"Um, yeah," he said. "We should look for her mom. But maybe. Maybe if things don't work out, we can, ummmm, foster her?"
Jasmine drooled a little.
Ryu accepted the baby, and Julean could see his obvious contentment. Somehow, for whatever reason, he liked this, at least for now, while the baby wasn’t crying. It was nice to be like a family, here, with Julean. Yuki eyed the baby in Ryu’s arms, and saw the look that Julean gave him and the child. The new wish that formed in his heart, with all the cursed possibilities that could spring from it. A part of her knew she could manipulate the outcome, but the rest of her whatever she could call the half-decent part of herself, didn’t desire that. But at the same time, he knew this could not come to pass. Neither of them was mature enough to take care of a child. The future that Julean was seeing was rosier than reality. She would have to nip it in the bud. They would have to return the child. And she would have to ensure that Julean did not get any unfortunate ideas until he was prepared. She cast a spell, knowing full well he lacked the ability to detect it, given his current magical prowess. Ryu seemed not to notice, and wandered in the direction of the kitchen with the baby in tow, reaching out to take Julean’s hand in the process. Yuki walked alongside them, saying nothing of what she had done. “They are so more complex than baby birds, child. This is an entire life, and you are also still a child. I suppose you can ‘foster’ her for now, but I expect you not to drag your feet.”
Julean clasped Ryu's hand fondly and leaned over his arm to look at Jasmine. She seemed so human; would she change as she grew?
"Ah ... yeah. You're right, Boss." Of course Yuki understood parenthood better than anyone in the house. But he was sure that they could make a good home for a little devil, and with four "parents" all working together, it'd be easier than usual, right? He could even hire a nanny. Plus, the money they used to spend on designer drugs and weed (after going clean) could cover stuff like diapers and toys ...
In the kitchen, the girls were done heating a bottle of formula; they both had anxious expressions, and Tia was much paler than usual.
"Here," she said, gently passing the food to Ryu. "We followed the instructions. I'm so glad you came, Aunt Yuki."
As they spoke, Julean loaded the security cam footage on his phone, through an app. It was easy to find the snippet of film that captured Jasmine's arrival.
"Damn," he muttered, tilting the screen toward Yuki and the others.
One of their front cameras was pointed toward the cul-de-sac; it captured the top half of an old Toyota pull up in front of the gate and park. A moment later, a young woman in a loose hoodie and sweatpants, hood pulled over her face, pushed open the pedestrian gate with her hip; in her arms, she carried the basket. Up the walk, she ran ...
Julean switched to the porch cam, which showed a more detailed view of the woman. The top half of her head wasn't visible, but her lips were soft and sad. She lowered the basket, hesitated, kissed Jasmine once on the forehead, her shoulders trembling with quiet sobs, and then sprinted away.
“She doesn’t look like a springheel,” he said, as if he knew what a springheel looked like. “So must be the dad?” Yuki smiled, accepting the bottle with her free hand. She examined the bottle itself, and then squeezed some onto her arm, testing the temperature and ensuring it was safe to administer to the baby. When she was satisfied, she brandished the bottle and made a gesture to Ryu that said ‘give me the child.’ He obeyed, albeit somewhat unwillingly, handing the infant to Yuki. The demon adjusted the child’s position in her arms, and then looked at all four, as if she was an ancient philosopher addressing her students. She adjusted the bottle’s position, and happily demonstrated the position of the bottle. “You should check the temperature with a food thermometer before giving it to the baby. And when you feed, it should be just like this.” Yuki then demonstrated feeding the baby. How long, how to prevent bubbles, how to make sure the baby did not have gas afterwards. When she was satisfied, she handed the child back. It occurred to her that this was a problem she could likely resolve, if she meditated on it. Find the mother, at the very least, but… She was also not here to solve all of Ryu and Julean’s problems. Perhaps if they were unable to find the mother by themselves. They had created this frame, which always kept them in view, and if she interfered too much, she had no doubt she would be found out somehow. “One cannot be sure what the mother was. They can be quite human in appearance, besides certain traits. This is not helpful in our pursuit of finding her, however.” Ryu looked back at Julean and smiled, “I think we could ask your viewers if they maybe know anyone? How many people can have a secret baby?” Yuki remained oddly silent as this question was considered.
If Tia was puzzled by the springheel comments, she was too stressed to say anything. Instead, she listened to Yuki's advice in rapt attention. Jasmine was dressed in a soft onesie with closed sleeves and booties, preventing her from grabbing stuff with her little hands. Notably, as Yuki patted her back, she'd feel two lumpy little growths on the newborn's back, almost where wings would be.
Julean's eyes were soft and fond as he watched Yuki care for Jasmine. It was sweet how gentle Boss could be, when needed.
"Ryu has a point. Our videos are a direct line to the mother," Katy agreed. "She seems to watch our shared channel, as well as the individual ones." At that, she glanced at Tia, almost sympathetically.
"I said I wanted to be a mother someday, not right this instant," Tia whimpered. "Is this my fault? Poor Jasmine. We really should call 9-1-1."
Shit. Tia didn’t know about the supernatural or Yoshio’s demonic nature. She was going to ruin everything … "Look, let's wait a day, okay?" Julean pleaded gently; he put one hand on Tia’s shoulder to remind her that she wasn’t alone. "Twenty-four hours to make contact? If we can find the mom, maybe there's a way to help her without involving police."
"The question is," Katy continued, "what do we say in our video?"
Suddenly, Jasmine made a SERIOUS little face. And then.
"Oh, god." Julean covered his nose. "Did she just ..."
Indeed. She had.
Ryu shook his head at Tia, rocking Jasmine back and forth gently as he discussed the child with the three influencers. “It isn’t your fault. You didn’t say ‘give me your child right now.’ You just talked about what you wanted. There’s nothing wrong with that.” His voice was gentle as he bounced the baby.
Yuki turned gently on her heel to address the two women; “This is a very special child, whose grandparents may wish ill on her due to her birth defect. Therefore, contacting the authorities directly may not be the best recourse…”
She smiled serenely; “I would say something genuine, like ‘And this is little Jasmine, whose mother is very frightened and alone right now. If you’re out there, we care about you and want to help you and your little one in the best way possible. Please contact us when you can if you have any information about this child. We will do everything in our power to make sure that you and your baby are safe and reunited.’ Or something of that nature. You know.” Yuki made a delicate gesture and did not elaborate further. “Oh. It looks like Jasmine needs her diaper changed..”
She turned sharply to look at Julean directly, smiling.
Julean flinched at the prospect of changing a diaper. Was Yuki really suggesting that he ...
Yes. Yes, she was. But he could handle it. Had to! Babies pooped a lot. At least once a day. And if Julean was going to be a good papa to Jasmine, he had to keep her happy and clean.
"Okay," he said, hopping from foot to foot in an attempt to psych himself up. "Yeah, okay. I'll be right back with supplies."
He'd need to protect himself from contamination. Fortunately, Julean dyed his own hair, so there was PPE in his bathroom. Plastic gloves, hair nets, a splatter coat. He should protect his mouth and nose with a disposable face mask, too ...
With a surge of speed, Julean sprinted out of the kitchen.
"After posting the video, I'll open my DMs," Tia said. "Most of the responses will be, um, weirdos, but I can weed them out by asking for a description of the baby's birth defect. What is it?"
She looked at Ryu, as if he already knew the answer.
Ryu unwrapped the baby carefully, looking for whatever might tell them that she was something other than an adorable little girl with a red patch on her face. Was it the mark? It couldn’t be. It had to be something else much more obvious and frightening. He turned her around in his arms, trying to feel her feet for tiny hooves. Checking her mouth for little fangs, and her head for tiny horns. Yuki merely smiled knowingly, and gestured to the baby’s back with a theatrical gesture, and Ryu turned her around to show them, unbuttoning her baby onesie.
Baby Jasmine shifted restlessly in Ryu's grasp, trying to grab him (alas, her grippy little fingers were thwarted by the onesie). He found no teeth in her gummy mouth, and nothing unusual about her feet--they even had the typical amount of toes. But when Ryu unbuttoned the back of her onesie, he saw it: A pair of fleshy pink, featherless wings. The tiny appendages were folded uselessly against Jasmine's back. At the reveal, Tia gasped audibly, and then blushed with embarrassment. "I'm sorry, Jasmine," she told the baby. "You're perfect. Don't mind me." Jasmine kicked her leggies, unfazed. "They're just extra arms," Katy lied to Tia. "Polymelia, you know. She probably absorbed her conjoined twin in utero." "Oh, no!" Suddenly, Julean SLID into the kitchen, donned in full SPLATTER PREVENTION GEAR. "I'm ready to CHANGE YOUR DIAPER, Baby!" He held out his latex-gloved hands and wiggled his fingers, as if encouraging Ryu to hand over the baby. “She’s so metal! I love it. But yeah it would um. Explain why she might… have some family hardships…” Ryu smiled, and put down his AWESOME FIRE DRAGON BLANKET to provide something soft for the baby to lay on. He then put down some newspaper, and placed the child down right on it. He gave Julean the thumbs up. He got this. He could change a diaper. Aunt Yuki looked down at Julean, her expression knowing. He wasn’t going to last, even with he PPE. The smell of baby poop was something particular.
Katy and Tia watched Julean with wide-eyed disbelief as he sloooowly knelt beside the baby on the blanket. They didn't think he could handle one diaper? Millions of new parents changed diapers every day! It didn't take a diploma, cmon.
"Helloooo little Jasmine," he sang. "Stinky baby."
Her diaper was fastened around the tummy with a sticky tab. OK. He just had to pull it off and then ...
A second after he opened the diaper, the smell hit him like a bulldozer.
"Gah!" Julean looked aside and squeezed his eyes shut. “Is that normal?! Is she sick?"
He tugged the diaper away from Jasmine and folded it into a bundle, but he must've done something wrong, because Jasmine kicked her legs and made a fussy little sound.
"Somebody incinerate this! Antichrist! And ... and how do I clean her? Toilet paper? Don't cry, baby, don't cry ..."
At that moment, he noticed a trace of the *UNMENTIONABLE STUFF* on his glove. How? How did he become compromised so quickly? And where else had it gone? For a second, his brain shorted out and he just stared at his hand. Then, as Julean turned his glove inside-out for rapid disposal, Jasmine began to cry. Babies shouldn't be sad during a diaper change, right? They should be happy? Was he messing up?
He felt his eyes began to burn. It never failed: when somebody else started crying, it was hard for Julean to stay dry-eyed, especially when he was stressed.
“Am I hurting her?” he asked, looking at Ryu for help.
Yuki’s broad smile became broader. She looked openly amused by his struggles, but it quickly transformed into sympathy. At least he was trying, as ridiculous at this was. Perhaps he would learn in time. The boy really did want this, didn’t he? “That is, unfortunately, quite normal. Their fecal matter changes scent as they become older and consume different food. This is the stool that comes from an all-milk diet. Remember, they defecate quite often, but it is usually prompted by a meal.” As the baby started to cry, Ryu picked up the diaper wipes, and started to work on the baby, assisting Julean. The man needed help, and he was going to bail him as best he could, bare hands or not. He didn’t notice Julean’s tears through the face-shield, even when Yoshio did. “Julean, um, you have to use diaper wipes. You aren’t hurting her…” Yuki craned her head, smiling faintly. “You have to scoop the stool towards the back, and into the diaper to avoid wasting them.” Offered Yuki helpful, her hands held out in front of her like the Head Cenobite.
"Oh my god. Julean PARKER is changing a diaper," Tia gasped at Katy, who started filming *just to prove it happened*.
Meanwhile, Julean was entirely focused on the task at hand. "Okay, Aunt Yuki. Let's go." He wanted to wipe the tears out of his eyes but was afraid of contaminating them with UNMENTIONABLE STUFF. "I'll do that." With Ryu at his side, Julean definitely felt more confident. Using his still-gloved hand and a couple wipes, he worked on cleaning Jasmine. In order to spare his delicate nose, he breathed through his mouth.
"Jasmine, you're so cute but so gross," he muttered. "Howwwww."
Once again, Ryu's presence seemed to calm Jasmine, who looked up at him and made happy faces whenever he spoke.
"I think she's ready for a new diaper now," he said, sniffling. "Wait, do we have to powder her first?" He seemed to remember that baby powder was part of the whole process.
Suddenly, the motion sensor beeped. Somebody touching the gate? Had the mother returned?
"I can check," Katy volunteered.
“Baby powder helps keep the baby’s rear end dry and avoids rashes. I am glad you remembered.”
Yuki did not say that there might be hope for Julean yet, but she was thinking it. Perhaps rightfully. He was suffering through this with as much grace as Yuki felt was possible for him to summon. Why it was almost uncharacteristic. Ryu helped inspect the baby’s rear end. Spotlessly clean, AND she had stopped crying. Perfect. Exactly what he needed. He picked up a clean diaper and did a quick switcheroo, placing the new diaper on the tiny baby and applying the Velcro straps. Ryu then shuffled the onesie back on the child, buttoning up the back. “Let me know if you need help!” Ryu called out after Katy. He felt a surge of fondness for her as she left, and suddenly was glad that she was here with him.
"We need a biohazard disposal unit," Julean said, laughing shakily with relief. Operation Diaper Change had been a success. That was as bad as it got, right? And he did it. Mission accomplished.
Now, he just had to do it again. And again. And ...
Reeling with the reality (again and again and again and again and), he removed his glove and mask, and then bundled everything in the newspapers. They really needed a dedicated trash can for Jasmine-related biohazards.
"We should buy her more clothes," Julean said. "A couple outfits. If her mom returns, she can keep them."
He reached out and touched Jasmine's head, which was soft with wispy baby hair. It made him emotional, somehow; she was so fragile and helpless. How could she survive in the world, unscathed? How long would it take for the meanness and tragedy to hurt her permanently?
With every ounce of strength he possessed, Julean held back his stressed-out, sappy tears. "Gucci makes onesies," he said instead.
From the foyer, Katy called out, "That's weird! Nobody there now! Wonder who set off the motion sensor!"
“Ok!”
Ryu nodded. The baby needed clean clothes to wear. More than just this single set she had on right now. Otherwise she might get rashes or sores like a human. And the little guys were sweaty sometimes too! He picked up Jasmine and held her against his chest, bumping her slightly. She was probably going to go to sleep soon. He could feel it. And she was all done with eating and pooping, and was probably tired now. Yuki eyed the child, and then the box with the disassembled crib. There was something more useful that Ryu could be doing right now besides cuddling with the child. She gestured to Ryu. “Ryu, boy, you should set up that crib, and give the child to Julean for now. Julean, keep rocking her. They like the motion. It helps them sleep. You should also decide what room she’s going to sleep in.” Ryu reluctantly handed the child off to Julean and gave him a gentle pat on the rear end. He’d be sure to show his appreciation later tonight when they were alone. “Huh, wonder who that could be…”
He muttered. There must have been someone. Maybe the mother had second thoughts about all of this.
Julean's cheeks went pink, and he smiled slyly; Ryu could always make him blush. Not that Julean minded.
"Good baby," he told Jasmine, who--thank antichrist--wasn't crying. Julean had never held a newborn before. He rested her head against the crook of one arm and used his other hand to support her lower body. Slowly, Julean swayed back and forth, hoping the rhythm would comfort her.
"Maybe we can put the crib in Ryu's room?" he suggested. "It's where I sleep most nights, too, so there'll be two of us to watch her."
"I'm going to film the, um, the video now," Tia announced. She looked visibly uneasy; her face was pale, her eyes were large with worry, and there was a furrow between her eyebrows. "I think the mom will be watching us closely, so if she decides to comment, the response will be quick. But just in case, I'll leave DMs open for a couple days. Can somebody else read them for me? Anyone else, honestly. I just don't want to see ... the bad stuff." She wrung her hands.
Meanwhile, Katy was showing Ryu a replay of the outdoor video.
"This is when the motion detector went off," she said, holding up her phone. "Look. Somebody was outside the gate. But it doesn't look like her, does it?"
In the video, Ryu could see the silhouette of a tall person in some sort of coat. Unfortunately, most of their body was blocked by the metal bars, and their face wasn't visible. They seemed to peek at the house before running away.
Yuki looked amused as she glanced over at Julean. Ryu, meanwhile, beamed at Julean. He had such a great attitude about all of this! Granted, Ryu knew in his heart that Julean was not actually going to enjoy getting up every two hours while the baby cried. In fact, he was fairly sure that this was a method of torture that was going to break him. He didn’t think to reason with him. He knew that Julean would know soon enough whether or not he was going to fold under the pressure of this little baby. “Yeah!” The demon tried to encourage Tia, placing a hand on her shoulder. He could cover all this for her. He could screen all the terrible comments. He always made a point of never reading anything that anyone sent him besides Julean, and now it was leading him in a more positive direction. Ryu noticed the strange, tall figure. It could not have been the mother. It looked nothing like her. This was someone entirely different. Perhaps… He could not be sure, but he had a suspicion. “Huh. Not her. We should set up more cameras….” Yuki placed herself between the ladies and Julean and spread her arms. “Now that everyone in settled, do you think you can take it from here?”
At the realization that Yuki was going to leave, Julean felt his hands go clammy. He reassured himself that if they had any urgent questions, Google was free, and Boss could be reached instantly by business card. Still, it was a bit like riding a bike without training wheels for the first time.
"We got this," he said, with partial confidence.
Julean had the sudden urge to hug Yuki before she left--both in thanks and for the comfort. Unfortunately, a sleepy Jasmine hogged his arms. So instead, he stepped close and leaned forward, turning his face to lightly press his nose against Yuki's temple.
To Ryu, Katy agreed, "You’re right. I'll pull the spare cameras out of storage and install them around the gate."
"What a situation," Tia sighed, as she prepared her phone to film a quick video. "Life is strange, isn't it?"
