The bookstore was packed. Hau may not have had a car to park, but he hadn’t missed the overflowing lot outside. And inside it was a madhouse of people. The aisles were crowded with adults and kids, people dressed in costume, and employees rushing from one place to another. The din of all their voices drowned out whatever music happened to be playing over the store's speaker system.
A loose line had formed, stretching from a table at the back of the store all the way to the front door. Everyone in it was holding a book, most probably taken from a display in the middle of the floor that had been picked clean. Hau had expected that though and had come prepared with his own copy from home. It was the latest in Skye Sawyer’s Crooked Rites series and it was selling out all over. Hau had only had his about a week but he’d already plowed through it - partly so his sister, in her enthusiasm, didn’t accidentally spoil it for him. She loved the series even more than he did, and with her birthday coming up Hau couldn’t think of a better gift.
The author’s table stood empty at the moment, but the signing was due to start soon, so the kitsune inserted himself at the end of the line and settled in to wait, watching people come and go through the store and picking out the coolest costumes.
