Ash looked back at the clam at Jedi's response, considering it. He doubted he would be able to pry the shell open with his fingers, not in this form at least, and it had been impressed upon him that it was not safe to shift in a place like this. He turned the closed shell over in his hands, then stepped back into the water and put the shell down, pushing it into the sand a bit. He was curious about how it would taste, but as he couldn't open it here, he made a note of what it looked like so he could look for more in a more secluded locale.
He moved a bit away from the clam, looking down in the water for other shells. He picked his way a bit deeper into the water, letting the waves lap against his thighs. There was a dark clump of sea plants floating on the surface, and he made his way nearer to poke at it. A short inspection had him determine that there were no fish hiding in it - a disappointment - and he moved away to look at other things.

So had Ash never tried clams before? That seemed to be the case. Certainly a city so close to the coast had a wealth of seafood. He'd seen signs everywhere for the fresh fish market at the city's waterfront. Back at home, Hau could never get away from seafood. He'd had clams cooked up every way imaginable and, frankly, he was sick to death of them and just about anything else edible that came out of the ocean. Maybe... maybe the young man was just as much a stranger to this place as Hau was to Wathais. He'd heard stories about supers from other worlds outside this one and something about him seemed to hint at that. It had been a nagging thought in the back of his mind since he'd first seen the pair.
Hau looked up to Jedidiah. "Not to pry or anything, but are you two from around here?” He asked with a note of curiosity, gesturing vaguely back in the direction of town. He would question Ash too but the other man had strayed deep into the water and Hau didn't want to follow that far, not with his leg.

Jedidiah:
"if you would like, Ash, we can go for seafood later? then you can try a lot of clams and other various seafood. " he offered. probably not as 'fun' just buying it then it is hunting or finding them. . . . . when he moved away he continued to search for shells when Hau asked if they were from around the area. . . ". . aaah. . to be honest? no, not really. hes from a different country and I, myself am from an area pretty far from here. . . my birth-home was high in the mountains were the trek was dangerous and half the time impossible without proper equipment and it snows by the foot. . . .there was the forest on one side and the beach on the other side. . . just, had to stay on the paths and be leary of the shear death drops. . " he replied.
" for a while after my parents allowed me to finally move out I was the only doctor for miles for the near by village. . . half of the time I was the EMS and the only doctor since not all of them were able to navigate the mountains as easily. . . .probably one of the only good bits about my height. " he added. "only moved when they no longer needed me. when a a few hospitals popped up and more doctors came to work. . . . so. . alot of this I believe is fairly new to Ash and myself. . . I just read up on areas before heading there just in case."

Ash had begun to meander his way a bit further down the shore, moving back up to where the surf didn't wash up so high, when he realized Hau was speaking. He paused, glancing back - his ears wanted to twitch, to better hear the other's words, but they were too small like this to do much good. He glanced from Hau to Jedi and then back as the giant answered for them both. To tell the truth, he wasn't sure how to answer the question, and it was a relief for Jedi to answer for him. He listened too to the giant's description of where he had come from - he hadn't realized the big man was from far away, as well.
"Aa, from-from far away, yes. But I am staying with Doctor Jedi now. Not... here, in the city. Near the edge. Near the mountain." He hesitated a moment, then picked his way back toward the other two to join in the conversation. "I... never ate very much ocean food when-when I was home. Sweet-water fish sometimes, but not... salt-water," he continued a bit shyly, glancing aside to Jedi a bit uncertainly. Was it okay to talk about home?
But thinking about it was more pain than pleasure, it made his chest feel empty, hollow. He ducked his head slightly, glancing aside, then busied himself with stooping to pick up a broken bit of white shell - nothing especially interesting, but a distraction nonetheless. "Aa, I went to catch fish here though, with a friend. But I did not think about shell-fish. I have never eaten one."

Well that did explain why Jedidiah was a walking ambulance, though it didn't hint at why he was so dang tall. "You must have all sorts of great stories I bet, feel like sharing some?" A remote stretch of mountains seemed like the ideal place to find all sorts of interesting supernaturals. Did he treat them? Or did he only help humans? How did either of them end up here of all places?
Hau would have liked to ask more but he hesitated. Already Ash was looking uncertain, like maybe he didn't want to reveal the information but didn't want to seem rude either. "But you don't have to say any more if you don't want to." Hau infused the words with some levity, so Ash could tell there was no judgment. He didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable and, despite his curiosity, he glommed onto Jedidiah's other comment.
"I'm not really sure of any great seafood places around here." He had taken a little time after first arriving to scope out the restaurants in Wathais, searching for anything like what he was used to back home. New was good and all, but after a while he knew he'd want something familiar, like what his moms used to make. However he'd never been able to find anything quite like what he had back on the islands, even the simplest of dishes never squared up to what he was used to. That had been a disappointment to discover. "But some of it might be better cooked at home." Hau suggested. "I know some recipes." He hadn't brought them to the mainland with him, he was a lousy cook, but he knew his family would be happy to send them over if he asked.

Jedidiah:
" all sorts, actually. . . . some are happy. . some are sad. . . some are abit. . gruesome. . .and some are abit humorous . . . " he replied. " honestly depends on which would be preferred. " he replied. . he glanced over to Ash, before giving him a reassuring smile. though. . .poor guy seems to be very homesick. . . all he can do there is try to talk to him in his native tongue . . . though. . .just as ash is still learning English, he is still learning the foreign tongue. he can only try and beat around the dark looking for things that might cheer him up. . .make him feel more at home. . .
when Hau started talking about seafood around the city, he was abit bummed since Wathias does sit next to the Ocean and has a lake with river systems. . . .though when mention potentially making them at home might be better. . he paused for a bit. . before adding he knew some recipes " . . well? never occurred to just make seafood at home. . though it might be fun . . " he replied. " do you have any recipes you would recommend? " he asked. he more or less thought about just looking it up on the internet. . . .

"Doctor Jedi does like to do cooking," Ash commented at the mention of recipes and cooking. He glanced from Hau to Jedi, offering a small, quick smile, then back. The distraction from talking about home was appreciated. "Maybe you can teach him a... a recipe?"
Ash shifted his hold on the shell-bag, drawing it closed for the moment to keep anything from falling out. Then he bent to rinse his hands in the water, shaking them off as he stood again. "I... I don't do cooking very good. It burns when I try," he admitted after a moment. He didn't mention that he usually preferred meat to be raw - but sometimes cooking added a bit more to the flavors. "But Doctor Jedi is good at doing it. He makes good foods."

"Maybe you can teach him a... a recipe? I... I don't do cooking very good. It burns when I try. But Doctor Jedi is good at doing it. He makes good foods."
Hau sucked in a breath. “You probably shouldn’t depend too much on me to help in the cooking department.” He had no sense for telling when something was cooked just right. More often than not things came out underdone with him. “But there are quite a few easier recipes that don’t require much cooking, or any cooking at all. A lot of the fish we use is raw, but it you have to get good quality ingredients if you’re going to do that.”
At Jedidiah’s question, he glanced out towards the ocean as he considered some recommendations. “Poke would be a good one to try, we usually make that with some ahi tuna. Or there’s salmon lomi, or shrimp tacos with some pineapple coleslaw. Those are the easiest things I can think of right off the top of my head.” Even an average cook like him hadn’t had any trouble with those recipes. It was probably a good place for the pair to start, if they liked sushi-type stuff.

Jedidiah:
he grinned nervously when Ash mentions that he burns himself. . . whoops. . .he probably picked a bad habit from him while he cooks. . . he forgets he doesn't necessarily sense temperature like other folks. . nor does he get burned. Cold? definitely, might be abit more sensitive to the cold. . . heat? nope.
"ah, that's probably my fault. . .I'm not as sensitive to temperatures that are perceived as hot. probably all the years of working at the forge or with a hearth fire growing up. " he sheepishly admitted.
"and I'm sure both of you can become better at cooking. . .just takes practice. and being careful around things that can hurt you like sharps and hot things. " he replied.
" so poke, shrimp tacos, and pineapple coleslaw? " he asked. "those sound like good places to start. thank you for the recommendations. " he replied. "aah. . .do you know how long the three keep for? " he asked. he did not wanna risk giving Ash food poisoning. . . or himself. . .

Ash glanced back and forth between Jedidiah and Hau, his brows furrowing slightly as he focused on parsing what they were saying. After a moment he shook his head slightly. "Aa, no not... I mean...I do not burn, but the food burns. I... never did cooking before I came here..." And to be honest, he didn't do much cooking since he had come here either, given his failed attempts and the fact that Jedi usually seemed to prefer to see to it.
His gaze flicked from Jedi to Hau uncertainly. "The fish is raw? That means uncooked?" He seemed to consider a moment, trying to decide on whether he should say what was on his mind or not. "Aa. I... think I like it better that way. But Doctor Jedi told me it is not... safe? To eat the uncooked food?" It hadn't stopped him, but it had made him less likely to eat raw flesh when around most company.
He listened curiously as Hau described the foods he was speaking of - a lot of the terms he used were unfamiliar, but a glance toward Jedi told him that the doctor seemed to know what the other meant. He nodded a bit shyly, willing to try any of them - he couldn't learn if he liked it or not without trying it first, after all.
"Do you like to eat those things? What is your favorite thing to eat, Hau?"

“How long do they keep for?” Hau gave a shrug, glancing at Jedidiah as he did so. “Honestly, I don’t know for sure. We’d never had leftovers to keep. My family are kinda big eaters. But I wouldn’t guess for very long.”
He noticed the confusion in Ash’s expression and knew he probably should have explained more. “Yeah, raw is uncooked. Certain uncooked foods are okay. Sushi is really popular and that’s usually made with raw fish. If that’s what you’re into, you should definitely give it a try.” Hau smiled to have found something he might enjoy. Ash was so shy and so hesitant, Hau was afraid the young man was uncomfortable around strangers like him. “My favorite? I’m rather fond of malasadas.” That was probably downplaying it a bit. He was a little self-conscious of his sweet tooth, but shifting consumed a lot of calories. “They’re basically doughnuts, if you know what those are.”
He returned his attention to Jedidiah, not wanting to exclude him from the discussion. “What about you? What do you like to cook?”

Jedidiah:
he nodded when Ash asked if raw was uncooked. before Hau started to explain the concept of sushi, and how some raw foods is ok. . .though if he was being honest he was from the mountains. . . where they had very old school food delivery. . . . things like fish do not really lat that long. .. .at least not long enough to survive the trip up a mountain. . . though he could see how people came to eating raw fish . . .especially those that live by the ocean. . .when food can potentially be literally a few hours old from when it was swimming around in the ocean to being on someone's plate. . . .
though hes never really had sushi . . . mostly cooked and more cooked foods. . . .partly due to the cold not necessarily permitting raw meats to remain nice and soft for too long. . . after cleaning the fish it would be more and more like a block of meaty ice. . .
"aaah. . . I like to cook savory and sweet things. . . . though I know alot more savory things, like ribs, stews and other various mountain foods then something like sweet bread? oh or cookies. " he replied. he was honestly learning about what even are sweet things. . . cookies was a new discovery for him, just as sugar was. "I'm not too sure how the cookies turn out half of the time, but I will understand them and how to cook other sweets soon enough" he continued
though. . .poor Ash. . . hes practically the guinea pig in testing new foods. . . sometimes they were a hit? and sometimes, nope. . . hell nope. .

"Mm," Ash offered up a thoughtful noise. "I would like to try it. I... would like to try all of the things, to learn if I like them," he admitted after a moment.
"Sushi and... malasadas," he tried out the new words, trying to copy how Hau had said them. "So one is fish, and the other is... sweet fried dough? I... would like to try that sometime, as well. Do you think we could make those? And ah... and you could eat them as well? With us?" He glanced from Hau to Jedi - the first question aimed at Jedi, and the second at Hau. "And... is tea good, with those foods? I... I can prepare that, it is difficult to burn..."
He had, at least, known how to prepare and serve tea at home, even if he had never really cooked before. Although the teas here were... different than what he was used to back home. Still, he had been experimenting with what Doctor Jedi had available, as well as with plants in the near surroundings. "I do like sweet dough. When it is cooked, it goes well with tea."

Everything Jedidiah listed sounded good. Though that wasn't really saying much as food rarely, if ever, sounded bad to Hau.
"Do you think we could make those? And ah... and you could eat them as well? With us?"
It took a moment for Hau to realize the invitation was for him. Back at home, meal times had always been a big group affair. It was the one time of day his whole family - as well as an assortment of their friends usually - were all in one room together. Even his younger brother, who had hit that fiercely independent stage of teenager-dom, was there. Eating alone was one of those weird things Hau hadn't anticipated needing to get used to after he left. So the idea really pleased him deep down, but at the same time he hesitated. The offer was kind, but he didn't want to push himself on these people. After all, he hardly knew them. But he was very tempted. And in the end, that temptation won out.
"That sounds good. I mean, if Jedidiah's okay with it?" Hau felt a little bad asking, but it sounded as though Jedidiah was, if not used to it, at least well equipped for the task. And it wasn't as if Hau himself had a kitchen to offer up. He had a microwave. That almost worked.

Jedidiah:
"of course. " he replied happily. this was a great opportunity for Ash to gain another friend. as well as himself, though as large as he was, he was normally skeptical about people readily being friends with him. . . at least to the doctor, he assumes other folk need time to warm up to the idea of being friends with him from how tall and in some cases intimidating looking he can be. . . he doesn't try to be scary, being a walking skyscraper was more then enough. . . .
"we can share recipes and just eat and hang out. " he added. "though its not fancy kitchen like how some appear in TV, its plenty big enough to house cooking shenanigans of three guys cooking. . . ." he continued with a little bit of a chuckle. granted, he will need to make another stool- cant have the two short people warring over the one stool. he had the materials too just to get it done. " we have plenty of chairs and room at the table. " he happily stated.
