Kail laughed, even as the man lunged for him. It was as humourless and cruel as the laughter imagined by the Hunter, and he shook his head, incredulous, stepping deftly backwards to avoid the stab.
“You actually believe that, don’t ya?” He scoffed, raising his forearm to block the next blow.
The vicious sting of the blade sliced across his skin. Dark blood welled, but it was like he hadn’t felt the wound at all. He bared his teeth, simply bracing his stance as he watched the Hunter ready another attack. The angrier the man was, the sloppier he’d be. One more mistake closer to a torn throat.
The knife sunk deep into his thigh, and Kail lashed out with a stab of his own at the Hunter’s leg. He drew his arm back savagely, blood mixing with the water streaming across the blade.
“I woulda done anything for that kid. You woulda carved his heart out yourself if he’d started hunting humans. If he’d stopped behaving how you wanted him to.”
His voice was a low hiss as he backed away, and was all the more venomous for it.
“And look where being soft got him.”
Kail kept his distance, stalking in a slow limping loop around the Hunter with all the hungry, patient watchfulness of a circling vulture.
