“Gia. Nice name. Very Italian.”
Kail shook her hand firmly, cold skin against cold skin. His smile hadn’t faded in the slightest.
He got bored and lonely stalking the streets alone. Having someone to hunt with made all the difference. The challenge of an unknown adversary, someone to track down, had him riled up already.
“Jobs? You work for someone or what? Ghost hit-lady?”

The spirit nodded, and looked very pleased with herself. She'd picked it out and everything! Kind of. She'd fussed over 'name books' in the library for a month and made Ru pull up her family tree. But she liked her new name. Kail got it.
"Yes!" Gia didn't have much of a feel for temperatures, and did not notice the unnatural chill that Kail's hand possessed. If she had, she would've wondered what sort of being he was, but as it stood, he was just Kail. A murder man that was going to help her cut down the mug that tried to kill her darling family. It'd be duck soup.
The ghost bit her lip, she had said a little bit too much, they were getting too close to things she really wasn't supposed to mention. She was now standing a good two inches above the ground, her heels somehow clicking as she moved despite never touching the pavement. The reminder of her situation made her ghostly guts twist, and she looked up towards a sky that was too light polluted to have stars.
"Something like that back home. I'm from a real city."
The ghost seemed to go somewhere else in her mind, fidgeting with the pearls of her necklace and frowning off into the distance. Home, with all her nieces and nephews. The fellas at the ghostly speakeasy. Streets she knew and that made sense. She still wasn't used to this place, not all the way. And while that was great for adding a little excitement, she didn't really want too much of that.
She came back to herself, and tilted her head at Kail.
"Are you local?"

If he’d learnt anything from the spirit, it was that ghosts didn’t like to be questioned about their past. When Gia fell silent and contemplative, he flicked his lighter on and off absentmindedly, glancing down the street. He’d wait. He could see she was getting cagey.
“What, Wathais ain’t real enough for you?” He teased, slumping back against the wall.
“Nah. I’m from up north. Middle-of -nowhere Canada. I’ve been here a few years now, though.”
He’d never planned on staying. Probably shouldn’t have, with the way things were going. But he had things keeping him here, now. And if he left he’d have no one.
“I dunno why. I like being somewhere with other supers, I guess.”

"I'm sure it's fine if you're from Nowhere, Canada."
Gia was smiling again, and folded her arms. Wathias did have a lot of 'supers'. Monsters. Creatures. Nonhumans. Paras. She'd seen several terms come and go to describe people that weren't human or were something else additionally. She liked to think she was still somewhat human. Just without the flesh and bones.
New York hadn't had a small population by any means. Based upon what she'd observed, though, the ghost had to admit the community had more... Well, community. The underground of Wathias was incredibly thought out, and citizens could enjoy walking down the street in their natural forms like they owned the joint.
"There's benefits. Drawbacks. You can get away with more when nobody knows what you are."
She wrinkled her nose when she thought back to Ru telling her she couldn't haunt cabs. It was her opinion, she should be able to do whatever she wanted. No amount of ghostly activity was dangerous. You'd never be able to convince someone that didn't believe in ghosts ghosts were real, not until they saw one or themself. And even then- nobody would then believe that person. She knew how this worked.

“Yeah, tell me about it. The WDSA are goddamn everywhere.”
He slouched his shoulders, kicking his shoe against the ground. His expression had scrunched into a scowl.
“You had trouble with them? No offense but you kinda stick out. I mean, your get-up is real nice. But humans don’t dress that nice anymore.”
His own outfit was a testament to that. Scuffed boots, dark jeans and a well-worn hoodie that only seemed to accentuate his gauntness. He liked complaining about ‘humans these days’ as much as the next supernatural, but truth be told he’d been nothing but relieved when everyday suits went out of fashion. He wasn’t exactly a formal kind of man.

Gia grumbled, nodding her head. The WDSA made things far more difficult. Although, she wouldn't have met Ru without them. He was now what she'd consider a dear friend, and it was thanks to him she was able to be...well, herself.
"Oh, the law told me to stop haunting hacks. Sent a head doctor type to tell me to scram out, see. I've been more selective of my hauntings now."
Her more deadly activities were every under the radar, and she'd had little trouble their beyond needing to be careful about being seen. The regular stuff. The same things she'd needed to watch out for back home.
The ghost seemed to brighten at the complement, and touched the side of her dress, appreciating it once more as if for the first time.
"I can change the rags, now. Look how I want. I don't care for modern clothing."

"Tch, 'course they did." Kail rolled his eyes. "They'd burn the bones of every ghost in the city if they could."
He wondered if the spirit would like his new ghost friend. Probably not, but maybe she'd like Gia's fashionable appearance.
"Yeah, I can tell. Look, its a nice get-up. Ya just look like you're off to a costume party or something."
His tone was clearly teasing, and he grinned as he looked down at the woman.
"So. We gonna go hunt down Kyle or what?"

Gia made a noise of consideration, looking mildly approving instead of distressed. She would be mildly impressed by Ru if he was going to blip off ghosts during his work hours. The man was frustratingly kind, irritatingly reluctant to pick fights, and unwilling to do more than drink bagged blood.
"The living should put more care into their looks."
The ghost shook her head again, but let it drop. She was far, far more interested in hunting down Kyle with this friendly new guy. Bloodlust replaced complaints about the dressing habits of the living.
She clapped her hands together, nodding. Her dark brown eyes sparkled with malice and excitement.
"Ab-so-lute-ly! I don't know where he is, see, but my nephew encountered him around here before."
A lot of these 'supers' had ranges they liked to go in, special hunting grounds. She knew she surely did, and it was similar for a lot of the things that went bump in the night. She'd know the monster when she saw him, though. She had keen instincts. Like a wolf. Or a large cat.

“Damn. We’ll find him for sure.” Kail assured, pushing off the wall and slinking a few steps ahead of Gia. He turned to face her, walking backwards for a few paces.
“So, what’s ya nephew do?” He asked, curious. “This Kyle just attacked him outta the blue kinda thing? Or they got history?”
The more he knew the more likely they’d be able to track Kyle down. There were hundreds of predatory supers in the city, but few bold enough to go attacking people. And to not finish the job - so damn sloppy.

Gia strolled after Kail, walking an inch or two off the ground in her excitement. Her heels somehow echoed on the pavement all the same.
"It was a random thing, see. He's a good egg, not a trouble making bone in his body," She shook her head fondly, " He's a doctor? Or a nurse. Very respectable. I don't know what Kyle's beef was with him was, if he was just hungry, but he tried it again."
The spirit looked up at a streetlamp. If only she'd been in the couple's life then. She would've been able to protect her family. Really, that was the one thing she was good for, what she'd told her sisters and brother she was doing down here on earth. It was pathetic she couldn't even do that properly.
"He's okay, though! My nephew is doing well. He found a sweetheart. They're both men, you can do that now."
Gia nodded smartly and wagged a finger as if she was explaining some clever hidden knowledge to Kail.
"I wanna bop him before he tries it again. I'm watching them now, but it's, uh... 'pro-active'."

Kail fell into pace with Gia, smiling a little to himself when he noticed her floating. His own footsteps were silent, his gait a distinctly predatory and non-human lope. It wasn't as if there was anyone around to see the either of them.
"Lets hope third time ain't the charm for this dumbass." He shook his head, scoffing, and privately imagined how easy it would be to kill a human nurse. Some of the predators in this city were pathetic. Maybe he had a few loose ends of his own, but agents and hunters were a whole different category of human.
"Oh, yeah, being gay and all." Kail sounded proud of himself for knowing the correct terminology. "Good for them or whatever."
He nodded back, thinking hard.
"You could use your nephew as bait, you know. Lure Kyle out and jump him before he can do anything."

Gia put her hands on her hips, frowning. On one hand, that would potentially draw out the wrong number. On the other hand, she surely couldn't use her nephew as bait! The guy had already been hurt by the monster twice. What if she got Vincent out as bait and then her reflexes failed her? The spirit shook her head.
"Bait isn't a bad idea, but would make it easier for there to be that third time, pal. I don't think he'd agree, see."
The ghost played with her pearl necklace, frowning.
"I was hoping that a dame on her own would be bait enough, but I've only found human goons looking for easy targets," she'd scared them off with ease, " Say, you said you've been here a few years, is this the right spot to even look?"
Gia tilted her head, the feather on her headpiece shifting to follow the movement. Was there a more notorious place that she hadn't heard of? She was dimly aware of the underground, but without explicit orders and directions she got lost fairly easily.

"Yeah, I guess ya right." Kail sighed. Bait would've been fun.
"Kind of. We're still kinda close to the city, you know?" He gestured with his chin at the distant skyscrapers. "If I was going after someone..." He thought hard for a few seconds, and then smiled brightly. "I guess I'd go for anyone anywhere if I could get away with it, but usually I'd hunt a few blocks further out. Right where the industrial estate and old factories start. It's close to the woods but still has a fair few humans passing through."
He kicked a can down the street, hands deep in his hoodie pockets. All this talk was getting him hungry.
"I bet Kyle lives out there on the outskirts. Plenty of unregistered supes do."

Gia nodded. It would've been fun, but that was her dear nephew!
The spirit made a noise of contemplation, looking around the dim streets and their dark shadows. They were still in the city's sprawl, a thing like what they were hunting wouldn't want too many possible eyes. It made sense, especially with all the WDSA crawling around. Unregistered Supers... Gia supposed that included herself.
"Let's get a slant then."
She clapped her hands together with a smile, then tilted her head the other direction. Kail talked like he was in the habit of hunting people. That didn't bother her, not really. It wasn't new information either, he'd mentioned his gun and the harvesting of souls.
"Are you a people eater, Kail?"
The question came as innocently as someone asking if he liked dark chocolate or not. Gia had spent plenty of time with vampires, the mean kind and not whatever Ru and August were, and the thought of being friendly with someone who did such things didn't shake her much. There wasn't anything left of her to eat, anyway.
