Wren gratefully accepted the coffee, taking a long sip. They could feel it waking them up and they hadn’t realized how much they needed it. Wren glanced at their companion trying not to stare too long at anything. They didn’t want to give Edge the wrong idea though technically it was the right idea. Edge didn’t need to know it though.
“Yeah! I help process DNA, take samples and basic autopsies. It’s not really as exciting as TV makes out. Results take time. Sometimes they let me use my Ghoul skills to get their last minutes or whatever but memories aren’t always right. It feels good to put my skills to use helping people. I can also eat pretty ethically.”
Wren smiled at Edge’s modesty, they were probably way more popular than he was letting on. That was fine though, it was just one more admirable quality in their new friend.
“I can handle eyeliner questions as long as they return the favor! I’m always looking for new techniques. My shows? Uh they tend to be kinda niche? As long as you’re comfy around lots of queer people it’s fine. I usually do a show at Villains once or twice a month and sometimes at Frankie’s. Anywhere that’ll book me. What about you? I can do your eyeliner anytime or show you how… Heh maybe you can be my drag child?”

The Darai listened quietly as Wren explained their work, sipping his tea all the while. It was good to hear that the job made sense for them, that they could use their abilities for good and find a way to live that worked for them. This served as another reminder that he really had to read up on the different species of this world, he knew practically nothing about ghouls. He wondered if ghouls like Wren were more the rule or the exception. Regardless, the purple-haired super made for pleasant company.
“I don’t know, to me it sounds very action-packed”, Edge said, putting his mug down on the table, “pretty sure my head would explode in thirty seconds tops.”
He smiled when Wren offered make-up tips. They were clearly good at it, so who knew, maybe the band could learn something.
“I don’t know if there’s much technique to what we do. It gets messed up quickly, Y’know?” Edge chuckled, drawing a finger down his cheek to mimic bleeding eyeliner. His chipped black nail polish somehow helped sell the pantomime. “And I’d be a pretty shitty punk musician if I wasn’t cool with queer people, wouldn’t I?”
He recognized a few of the venues Wren mentioned, though he had never really visited any of them. Having a performing job like his meant that he spent plenty of time as various venues, in the midst of the energetic atmosphere of a concert, which often left him wanting to spend his free time in quieter spaces, like the cafe they were currently at. But a drag show did sound fun, and he was always open to expanding his horizons when it came to different types of performance arts.
“I perform at small independent venues mostly like Vega and The Observatory” Edge replied, “but a few more rock-oriented bars hire us too, like Riot. Have you heard of that one?”
Then Wren’s last words sunk in properly and Edge couldn’t help but grin. “Haha wait, drag child?”, his tone was light, joking “Are you saying I seem immature?”

Wren laughed when the darai said his head would explode.
“Of boredom maybe. It’s a lot of waiting and paperwork. Plus people don’t appreciate witty puns nearly as much as the TV makes out.”
Wren grinned, they were glad he was queer friendly but it still didn’t answer their actual question. This guy refused to play ball with their snooping. It was fine they’d played this game before and considered themselves a pro. They weren’t above taking out Grindr and seeing if he came up.
“Oh that’s easy, you gotta lay down a primer, a good quality powder then a finishing spray. Try using nice soft strokes. Otherwise just blotting your skin to remove the grease should help a little. Glad you’re not homophobic, that’d be awkward. Always good to have an ally.”
Wren considered for a moment whether they should let Edge think they were actually calling him immature. It was a pretty funny response.
“A drag child is just a term for someone you mentor as a drag performer and part of your drag family. I’m not calling you immature but if uh the shoe fits… You have to pick out a good drag name though. The punnier the better!”

Edge nodded attentively as Wren gave thorough makeup tips, taking mental notes of it all. Normally, since he was just going to sweat it off anyway and the venues he performed in were often dark anyway, he didn’t bother with fancy layering or overly artistic strokes. But it would be nice to not have to wash eyeliner off his chin and out of his hairline after a long night of playing and singing.
“Sounds great, I’ll test it out at my next gig for sure”, Edge smiled, taking another sip of his tea, “and yeahh, I know I’ve certainly kicked a few homophobes or transphones out of the concerts I’ve played. That kind of hate is just such a waste of time, ain’t it?” Issues such as these were still rather surprising to the Darai, they hadn’t been an issue back home. Granted no one had really had time for it, what with the end of the world and all, but still…
As Wren explained, Edge couldn’t help but chuckle. “Ah, I’m just messing with ya, I had a feeling you didn’t mean it like that”, he grinned, “Well, if the band thing doesn’t work out, I know who to turn to. Luckily, I have already heard many puns with my name.”

Wren laughed in relief that Edge hadn’t actually been offended by them. They would hate to hurt anyone’s feelings like that. Edge refused to let Wren know if he was queer and so they gave up. Even if he was straight, he was very sweet but obviously not interested in them. It was a shame and did nothing to quell their crush.
“You’re definitely a man on the Edge. Is that your birth name? I’m curious about you. I feel like I have just rattled on all night without giving you a chance to speak. So tell me about yourself. You’re clearly a little more than human. If it’s not too rude… otherwise just tell me what you feel comfy with.”
They took a sip of coffee nervously, hoping they hadn’t crossed a line with their new friend. It wasn’t always easy to spot one until you had stepped over it.

Edge seemed as comfortable as ever, shifting in his seat a little to be able to stretch his legs out a little bit more. Though he wasn’t the best at being the topic of conversation- often not really knowing what to actually say about himself- Wren seemed so genuinely curious that he didn’t even think to brush it off.
“Alright, first off, I chose the name Edge myself, but it’s the only name I’ve ever had, so I guess you can call it a birth name?” He knew that the name was eccentric, by all means, but it was one he had chosen when he was much younger and it had undeniably grown on him. Besides, it was memorable, if nothing else.
“And you’re right, I’m not human… it’s the eyes that give it away, isn’t it?”, Edge took another sip his tea and debated how to go about it. Even after all these years, and much reassurance from Faolan, it still felt weird to talk about what he was so freely. It still sent his alarms blaring, a part of him feeling like this kind of freedom was too good to be true. “What I am is a long story and I don’t want to bore you more than necessary”, the punk began, leaning back in his chair slightly, “I’m something called a Darai”, he grinned, briefly flashing canines sharper than anything a human would have, “Don’t worry if you haven’t heard about that, I’m not from… around these parts. I came to Wathais innnn 2015 I think? So some things are still very new to me.”
He didn’t want to go into too much detail about the fact that he wasn’t from this world, both because he didn’t really understand it enough to explain it, and because it would only make him homesick down the line.

Wren sipped at their coffee as they listened to Edge. They were particularly interested by the idea he had named himself. They could relate to that but they had a feeling it was a different situation.
“I mean you could be one of those humans who spliced their genes or whatever but yeah. Aww it doesn’t matter if it’s your birth name or not, as long as it’s yours. I bet it has a lot of meaning. Wren isn’t my birth or legal name but it’s still mine. Well it’s lovely to meet my first darai. Hopefully I haven’t put you off meeting ghouls or any other supernaturals.”
Bubbles had helped them choose their name though she had been really keen on Stardust or Pinky. Wren was good it wasn’t one gender or the other. They were a little curious to know more but they weren’t about to probe further than was polite.
“You’re practically a native! I’ve been here a year or so. I don’t have any family so it makes it hard… I have Bubbles though. Have you ever met a house imp?”

The Darai had never considered he could get mistaken for a splicer. It made sense, he supposed, but then again, he had also never thought he could be mistaken for a hunter. Maybe he needed to change his image up? Edge chuckled at the thought
“Haha, nah don’t worry about it”, Edge smiled, waving a hand as he spoke, “believe it or not I have experienced much worse first meetings with people. So for a first meeting with a ghoul, it’s not all that bad.”
Wren was sweet, and it was nice to see that they had relaxed so much, despite their more turbulent introduction.
“And I mean, my name has meaning to that extent that I think it sounds good”, Edge explained with a shrug, “that’s all that has to matter in the end yeah?”
Edge’s smile softened a little has he heard Wren had no family. Though their situations were very different, the punk could definitely understand the feeling of loneliness that came with being somewhere new, knowing no one. At least the purple-haired ghoul seemed to be doing well for themselves, having already established themselves as a performer.
“No, I don’t think I’ve met a house imp?”, The Darai tilted his head, “much less heard of one.”

“Thanks! You’re pretty awesome for a fake hunter heh. Oh Edge is an awesome name. I just liked the sound of Wren too honestly. I think that’s enough, it doesn’t have to have a special meaning as long as it’s special to you. Like tattoos!”
Wren smiled pleased, this had really turned into a rather pleasant night. They certainly couldn’t complain about the current company.
It was nice to make another friend, Hank and Bubbles were great though. They were sad as the time got late, they had work too. Besides that they were probably keeping Edge from something important.
“Well! There we have an excuse to catch up again. You’ll have to meet Bubbles! She’s an imp and pretty cute when she’s not making trouble. I’m really sorry but I should probably leave you to your night…”
