Dietz hadn’t left, watching Hank drink his coffee with great interest. He sat down at the table even and placed his head in the hands. He motioned for Wren to drink their drink too. Bubbles continued to chew the marshmallows trying to fit in the hot chocolate as well. Her two tails wagging madly.
Wren looked slightly uncomfortable but tried to continue the conversation. They didn’t want Hank to think so badly of them. They just wanted Hank to be happy and he had such a special gift. They took a sip from their cup, it was really good.
“I understand. Sorry Hank. You gotta do what’s best for you. You’re a really great person. It’s just using my skills to help people makes me feel better about myself but that doesn’t mean you have to. Your writing is fantastic!”
Dietz leaned in, deciding to take his moment. He smiled again and the lavender smell wafted across the table.
“Oh? Do you write romance, Hank? I bet they’re really good.”

Hank wasn't sure if it was normal for Dietz to sit with his customers, but he didn't mind it.
He put his hand on Wren's arm, gently, and shook his head.
"No, no, please don't misunderstand me. I appreciate that you care for me and want me to do well. I'm glad you are able to use your talents to such success, Wren. I'm just happy where I am, you see? I like writing my books, my articles, I like not trying to figure out what the most advantageous move is sometimes. It's so, so busy up here without trying to direct it, yes. You are kind."
Turning to address Dietz and the lavender scent once he felt he had assured Wren everything was fine, he smiled.
"Oh, thank you, its mysteries, mostly. There's some romance in those, but, ahah," Hank took a sip of his drink," That's rarely my focus, no. Mysteries and freelance work, mmmhmm. I have thought about it."

Wren relaxed once Hank let them know he still liked them. Friends were hard and Wren didn’t want to lose their best one. Bubbles’ face was covered in chocolate and she was licking off every last bit. Wren was going to have to stick her in the bath when they both got home.
Dietz moved in closer to Hank. Putting his head on his hands.
“Ooooh! I love a good mystery. I write fanfics myself. Ever read one of those? I’m deep into the Sherlock and Holmes ships!”
Wren smirked and hid their expression behind their drink. Luckily it was really good. Wren was beginning to think Dietz was keen on old Hank.
Bubbles just stared. “Oooh do they have canons?”

Hank picked up a napkin and dropped it next to Bubbles, making a tutting noise, distracted from Dietz for a second.
"You're a mess."
As if remembering he was in a conversation, Hank turned his whole body to face Dietz, suddenly tucking his feet under him so he was sitting cross-legged in the booth. He blinked, then smiled a bit wider.
"I have read fanfiction before! I don't believe I've read any Sherlock Holmes fiction, I'm not opposed though. No. You write the romances?"

Bubbles took one look at the offending napkin and huffed. She took it and began attempting to clean herself but the tissue just stuck to her fur. The situation was not improving.
Dietz moved in closer to Hank, not taking any hints the other man may be giving and crossed his own legs. Wren just watched on, wishing they had popcorn.
“Wait?! You do!” Dietz gave a large smile. “I guess you could call it romance but uh it’s quite smutty. My main ship is Holmes/Moriarty because DRAMA! What Fanfics do you read?”
Lucky Bubbles was here or Wren would have felt like a third wheel.

"Drama, yes," Hank repeated, "I see, the spicy. Mhm. I don't read a lot of fanfiction, I prefer books you can hold in your hands. I do like the digital ones, glowing in the dark, but pages are so much faster. Which ones though? Mmmhm. Star Trek I've read, and those do have romance. A lot. And more."
Hank ran a hand over his hair, trying to concentrate on the subject.
"I don't write it myself much, I feel like I'm not capturing the characters others have written far better than I have correctly."
The mothman looked back at Bubbles's situation and frowned.
"Oh."

Dietz nodded along until other customers began giving him pointed looks. He stood up from the table giving a friendly smile.
“I better get back to serving customers. Pleasure to meet you, Hank. See you around, Wren. Madame Bubbles.”
Wren waved him off, before returning to Bubbles with a look of disgust. She was just a mess.
“How did you even manage this? Better get you home and straight into a bath!”
Bubbles made a grumpy face, sticking out her little tongue. There better be bubbles in that bath and she wasn’t talking about herself. Wren helped Bubbles regretfully into their backpack and stood awkwardly.
“Thanks for coming to my show, Hank. It means the world to me even if you’re staring at the lights. I know you’ll find the flame to your moth one day!”
Wren paid the bill before heading outside to say goodbye. They enjoyed their time with Hank and loved him for his oddness. He had a big heart and had been the first person to really care about Wren other than their sister. Hank was practically family at this point. Bubbles cared for them too of course but needed looking after herself. It was a little different.
